Carbon Glacier, for five trombones (2016-2022)

Carbon Glacier was initially composed in 2016, to mark the centenary of the United States National Park Service. It is named after a large glacier on Mt. Rainier. It then underwent a multi-year process of revision, perhaps the longest period between initial draft and final product of any of my compositions.

This piece is intended to convey the still, cold, geological solidity of the glacier. At the same time, it is a cry of anguish for the vanishing of this and other glaciers due to human-caused climate change.
