For piano, composed in 2021. Duration approximately 17 minutes.
This set of 24 short Preludes was inspired by my recent travels in and near Joshua Tree National Park. The Preludes are played entirely with the right hand, while the left silently holds down each Prelude’s key note for a shifting palette of resonance. Fairly narrow pitch range, tempi (“relaxed”, “jaunty”, “bright”) and dynamics (p-mf) reflect the subtle colors of the California desert.
Technically, these are studies in trichords found within ever-shifting seven-note sets.
